You might want to take a look at this (excellent) book called Visual
Display: Culture Beyond Appearances (edited by Lynne Cooke and Peter Wollen
for Bay Press in 1995). It contains two essays you may want to look at:

(1) Lisa Cartwright's "Gender Artifacts: Technologies of Bodily Display in
Medical Culture"
(2) Ludmilla Jordanova's "Medicine and Genres of Display"
