Nietzsche, Genealogy, History is a helpful essay when considering the
disadvantages of adopting the notion of "progress"- especially in the
teleological sense of evolutionary stages progressing towards the eventual
fulfillment of World Historical Spirit. Such a notion often leads to
smoothing out the differences, discrepancies, and discontinuities of the
'past', in favor of an endorsed or authorized 'present'. This is why the
Enlightenment notion of 'progress' has consistently been held in suspicion
by critical circles throughout the past century.
I might be wrong though- any comments?
